Need Christmas dinner ideas, away from home!!!?
Dec 17th, 2009 by admin
This will be my first Christmas away from my family, I just moved to CA, and really need to make xmas special so that I dont feel so homesick. I will be planning a dinner with my roomate, a friend, and a ladyfriend. What is traditional fare for xmas? I was going to get a ham, but how about turkey, chix, or some sort of beef? How much is prime rib? I dont think spam would cut it. Also, could use ideas for side dishes. Thanks. Happy Holidays.
Traditional Christmas dinner in California is either a ham or turkey, usually accompanied with some sort of potato dish, some sort of fruit dish (mandarin oranges, pears, fruit salad), and followed by a pie or cake for dessert. In parts of California, tamales and menudo are also traditional fare.

It’s YOUR holiday, so do whatever you feel like eating. Whatever is your personal "comfort food." Heck, you can go out for McDonalds if you want. Do whatever makes you happy, and start your own tradition.

if you can afford it try the boston market.

We’re cooking Italian for Christmas dinner – eggplant parmigana, salad, bread, appetizers and tiramisu for dessert. And champagne and red wine of course.
Do something that’s not too hard, but festive.

Go easy on yourself! Can you cook one meat better than the others? If so, build from there. Look for already made side dishes at the grocery store (like mashed potatoes or already chopped veggies). Visit http://www.foodnetwork.com or http://www.allrecipes.com if you want more ideas or you do want to do everything from scratch.
And don’t worry about "making it just like mom’s." You are starting your own tradition so be creative and make it your way … but if you do feel the need to try and recreate your family’s fav dish, I’m sure your primary food maker back home wouldn’t mind getting a call for some cooking advice 😉

Any meat will work great for Christmas. As far as side dishes go it depends on what your meat is.
If you choose..
Ham – you can make a scallop or agratine potato.
Chix – Mashed potatoes go great.
Turkey – do similar to what you do at Thanksgiving.
Beef – any kind of potato.
Jello salads are always a favrite with my family. They make a great side and they are nice and colorful.
Also make your favorite veggie or veggie tray. Rolls are good too. Make a pie or cheesecake for dessert.
Hope this helps give you ideas. Merry Christmas!! Blessings!!!!
